Recent Magazine & Anthology Appearances
ver the past couple years, my stories have appeared in the following publications:
Darker Discoveries
"The Eyes Have It," the story I read at the 2007 World Horror Convention Gross-Out contest, is appearing in a very limited promotional chapbook issued by Dark Discoveries Magazine. The chap also features stories by J.F. Gonzalez, Kealan Patrick Burke, Stephen Mark Rainey, Steve Vernon, Bill Gauthier and John R. Little ... so I'm looking forward to reading it! To get it, you can check out the promotional deal at Dark Discoveries website... but look fast -- this one's going to be available in less than 100 copies.
Doorways Magazine #4
My Halloween story "The Pumpkin Man," which I have performed on several occasions at libraries and festivals over the past couple years, is finally in print in the new issue of Doorways Magazine.
The story was originally slated to appear in Surreal Magazine, which unfortunately folded before printing the story, so I'm excited that it's finally out!
Fahrenheit #61
The 10th anniversary edition of the online Polish SF/F/H magazine Fahrenheit features a Polish translation of my flash fiction piece "Mirror Image," which previously appeared in the British anthology Nasty Snips and my collection Cage of Bones & Other Deadly Obsessions.
Fahrenheit has also published my short story "The Right Instrument" in a Polish translation.
IN DELIRIUM II is Out!
Back at the end of 2006, a group of Delirium Books authors worked with me to create In Delirium II, a tribute anthology to Shane Staley and Delirium Books. The book was sold out from the publisher in pre-orders, but there are some copies available in bookstores, including The Horror Mall.
If you can grab a copy, do -- this has some amazing stories in it from Tananarive Due, Tim Lebbon, Brian Keane, Matt Cardin, Patrick Lestewka, Wrath James White, Steve Rasnic Tem and many more.
"Pumpkin Head" in French!
The new issue of the French magazine Borderline includes a translation ofmy story "Pumpkin Head," which previously has appeared in English in Grue Magazine, Delirium Magazine, the anthology Candy in the Dumpster and my own Cage of Bones collection. Click the cover for a larger version.

- The Polish language edition of my first novel, Covenant (retitled as Demoniczne Przymierze), was released in August 2007 from Red Horse Books in Poland.
For information or to purchase, check the Red Horse site, or D&Z House of Books in Chicago, where I signed copies on Oct. 20, 2007.
Dark Discoveries #10, the Summer 2007 issue, features both an interview with me and a short story -- "Star on the Beach," which previously appeared in the British anthology Peepshow Vol. 1. The story was originally written for the Delirium Books anthology The Dead Inn II, which was unfortunately scuttled without being printed. I wrote much of this story in longhand on scraps of paper while sitting on Miami Beach, looking out at the eerie dark of the endless ocean underneath the light of the stars, with the neon of the city strip behind me. I think the location added a lot to the "feeling" that came out in the tale.
"The Devil's Platoon," my alternate history story about a German unit that makes a deal with the devil in a last ditch attempt to win WWII is now available in A Dark and Deadly Valley, from Silverthought Books.
The book features an amazing array of authors, including Brian Keene, Brian Hodge, Mort Castle, Rick Hautala, Gary Braunbeck and many more. Pick up a copy from Silverthought! My contribution also has since been reprinted in my collection Needles & Sins.
In January 2007, Moonstone Books released Kolchak: The Night Stalker Casebook, a new anthology of stories based on the characters from the original "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" TV series, including a story of mine -- "The Strange Events At Vishnu Springs." This story was great fun to write, since I used to watch the original "Night Stalker" series religiously as a kid. The anthology contains a great author lineup, including Christopher Golden, P.N. Elrod and Elizabeth Massie among many others!
My story "A Lack of Signs," about a shop that specializes in fulfilling the heart's desires of its customers, has been reprinted in the one-off magazine / anthology The Literary Bone. The story originally appeared in my Vigilantes of Love collection in 2003; this is the first time it has appeared in a magazine or anthology. The thick magazine is available through LuLu.com and also features stories by Ken Goldman, Donna Taylor Burgess, P.S. Gifford, Faye Sizemore and more.
I contribued a chapter about some of the key publishers in the horror small press for the new update of the HWA/ Writers Market nonfiction resource book On Writing Horror, edited by Mort Castle. The book also includes chapters from the likes of Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Harlan Ellison, David Morrell, Jack Ketchum, and many others who detail everything you need to know to successfully write and publish horror novels and short stories.
And the book is now available from Amazon.com!
My original short story "The Key To Her Heart" has just been released in the final issue of Wicked Karnival, which also features fiction from Edward Lee, Wrath James White, Graham Masterton, Ramsey Campbell, Greg Lamberson and many more.
This is another one of those tales that "killed" a magazine -- it was originally slated to appear in the '90s in a magazine called Haunts, which folded without publishing the story.
My short story "The House at the Top of the Hill" has been reprinted in a benefit magazine put together by Wicked Karnival called Hallows Eve.
All the profit made on this project will go to The Read Foundation.
The magazine also includes stories from Simon Clark, Rick Hautala, Joe Lansdale, Jeff Strand and more.
Whiskey Creek Press has issued an anthology called Fear which includes a reprint of my story "Long Distance Call," (which appeared in my first collection Cage of Bones & Other Deadly Obsessions.
Fear also includes fiction and poetry by Louise Bohmer, Vickie Britton, Loretta Jackson, Nancy Jackson, Giovanna Lagana, Janet Mills, Susan M. Sailors, Richard A. Satterlie, and Katherine Smith.
- Fahrenheit, Poland's online magazine of sci-fi, fantasy and horror has published a Polish translation of my short story "The Right Instrument"! If you can read it (I can't!) check it out in issue #53.
The final issue of Morbid Curiousity Magazine (released in 2006) features "Spectator at the Ring of Life and Death," the non-fiction account of the harrowing emergency birth of my son. (He was born via emergency c-section when his heart-rate kept diminishing.
I read this piece for an audience during the Morbid Curiousity Open Mic at World Horror 2006 in San Francisco.
My dark sci-fi story "The Strong Will Survive," about a doctor's quest for immortality via the children of others, received an honorable mention in the back pages of The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 2006! The story appeared in issue #99 of the seminal Space and Time magazine.
- Dark Doorways , a British anthology featuring work by Tim Lebbon, Greg Gifune, Maynard & Sims and more features a short-short by me called "My Aim Is True."
My zombie story "Camille Smiled," set in the same world as "Vigilantes of Love" appears in the just-released anthology Cold Flesh from Hellbound Books.
The anthology is edited by Paul Fry (who bought "Star on the Beach" for the UK Peepshow Vol. 1 anthology) and also features stories by J.A. Konrath, Tim Curran,
Patrick Lestewka
and more.
My essay about classic horror -- and the roots of my own love of the genre -- "Lions and Wolfmen and Scares" appears now in Wicked Karnival #4.
You can either download a free PDF copy at the Wicked Karnival Web site, or buy a print version through lulu.com.
- My
story "Green Green Glass" is featured in DAMNED:
An Anthology of the Lost. The book features stories about Heaven
& Hell, angels & demons, good & evil from top names in modern horror.
